With over 100 km of cycle paths criss-crossing the island, it makes sense to explore Ile de Ré on two wheels.

All the villages and most beaches are connected by a network of flat, well-marked trails, which wind their way through vineyards, salt marshes and pine forests, with the vast Atlantic Ocean glittering on the horizon. Every now and then you’ll come across ruined abbeys and old forts, and even when you have to take to the road you’ll find the honeysuckle-lined lanes so quiet that they’re suitable even for small children. There are bike-rental agencies all over the island, too – our favourite is Cyclo-Surf, which has a network of eight shops where you can hire everything from classic bikes to tandems, together with helmets and child seats.
