La Couarde has no fewer than eight beaches, all offering fine golden sand backed by pine forests and dunes.

This once-sleepy village became Ile de Ré’s first seaside resort in the early 20th century, and its beaches stretch for more than five kilometres. Each has its own appeal: Les Prises is a great place for sailing and stand-up paddleboarding, whereas La Plage de la Pergola, with its crashing waves and squawking gulls, is one of the island’s top surfing spots. Whichever you choose, make sure you stop at La Couarde’s morning market beforehand and pick up a picnic to enjoy on the sand.
