Salt was Ile de Ré’s main export for centuries, and several thousand tonnes are still harvested each year.

Salt was Ile de Ré’s main export for centuries, and several thousand tonnes are still harvested each year.

The process has changed little over the years, and you can see it in action on a cycle ride through the vast marshes and salt pans (sauniers) that surround the little village of Loix on the island’s northern coast. There’s also a small but interesting museum charting how salt has shaped the landscape, economy and development of Île de Ré, plus a boutique where you can pick up freshly harvested ‘white gold’ and various salt-themed treats to take home.
