Perched high above the coastal plains, whitewashed Ostuni is perhaps the most spectacular of the Valle d’Itria’s cluster of historic hill towns.

Nicknamed the Città Bianca (‘White City’), its walled old town is a tangle of narrow lanes and staircases that twist up to the Aragonese cathedral at the summit. Spend a day getting pleasantly lost and you’ll discover stylish bars, chic little boutiques, Baroque churches, café-lined piazzas, and patios brimming with potted cacti and brightly coloured bougainvillea. Keep your eyes peeled to the side, too: every now and then the buildings part, revealing tantalising glimpses of the sparkling sea far below.
